Stop Spinning – Start Winning
Break free from triggers that hold you back and move forward with clarity and confidence.
10 Triggers That Put People Into Spin Mode
We’ve all been there—stuck, paralyzed, and unable to move forward. This is what I call spin mode. It hijacks our most valuable resources—time, focus, energy, and effort—and leaves us drained but unproductive.
You may not experience all of these triggers, but I am sure some of them will be familiar to you. The key is to be honest about which of these are more likely to derail you. The first step to breaking free is recognizing the triggers and understanding their impact.1. Information Overload
- Impact on results: When we drown in data, it creates overwhelm and confusion. Decision-making slows to a crawl, progress halts, and opportunities slip by.
- Solution: Apply the Rule of 3 priorities — focus only on the three most important actions. Use decision deadlines and filters to separate what matters from the noise.

2. Perfectionism
- Impact on results: Waiting until everything is flawless delays launches, kills momentum, and often leads to nothing ever getting off the ground.
- Solution: Embrace the 80% Rule — if it’s 80% good, it’s good enough. Progress is better than perfection. Celebrate small wins to build momentum and confidence.
3. Conflicting Priorities
- Impact on results: Spreading yourself too thin creates decision fatigue, mistakes, and wasted effort. Urgency replaces strategy.
- Solution: Use the Eisenhower Matrix (urgent vs. important). Ask, “If I could only do one thing today, what would move the needle most?” Align tasks to core values.

4. Lack of Boundaries
- Impact on results: Without boundaries, time and energy are hijacked by other people’s agendas. Productivity suffers, stress rises, and your most important goals stall.
- Solution: Practice an assertive “yes to less.” Time-block your priorities, create buffer zones, and limit interruptions. Boundaries protect progress.
5. Fear of the Unknown
- Impact on results: “What if” loops keep you paralyzed. Instead of taking small steps, you spin in endless scenarios that drain energy and prevent growth.
- Solution: Use worst-case, best-case, and most-likely analysis to bring perspective. Anchor decisions in your values instead of your fears. Take one small action to reduce uncertainty.

6. Emotional Baggage
- Impact on results: Past failures, regrets, or disappointments resurface as shame. They hijack the present, keeping you from taking risks that could lead to success.
- Solution: Reframe past experiences as data, not destiny. Journal, talk, or coach through it. Shift the question from “What if I fail?” to “What if I learn?”
7. Analysis Paralysis
- Impact on results: Overthinking and comparing every option leads to stagnation. While you analyze, opportunities pass by and confidence fades.
- Solution: Limit choices to 3–5. Set decision deadlines. Focus on the “next right step” instead of the “perfect” step. Clarity often comes through action.

8. Misaligned Values
- Impact on results: When actions conflict with core values, guilt and frustration set in. Progress feels empty or forced, and motivation fades quickly.
- Solution: Clarify your personal values and align choices with them. Integrity-driven decisions not only move you forward but keep you fulfilled along the way.
9. Negative Inner Dialogue
- Impact on results: Self-criticism erodes confidence, keeps you from trying, and causes you to shrink back from opportunities.
- Solution: Replace “I can’t” with “How can I?” Practice self-compassion—treat yourself like a trusted friend. Use affirmations grounded in truth to build belief.

10. Lack of Recovery
- Impact on results: Without rest and renewal, efficiency plummets. Mistakes increase, resilience drops, and creativity dries up.
- Solution: Build micro-breaks into your day. Prioritize sleep, movement, gratitude, and practices like prayer or meditation. Recovery multiplies productivity.
Rebecca’s Story: Spinning in Place
Rebecca was successful in her corporate role. She had a strong résumé, a good salary, and the respect of her peers. But she also had a dream—to start her own business. For years, that dream lingered in the background. Every time she thought about making the leap, she found herself spinning.
For Rebecca, a few triggers were especially strong:
- Information Overload: She spent hours researching business strategies, comparing tools, and reading advice. Instead of clarity, she ended up overwhelmed and confused.
- Fear of the Unknown: The thought of leaving a stable job for uncertain entrepreneurship sent her into endless “what if” loops.
- Perfectionism: She believed her website, business plan, and branding all had to be flawless before she could launch—so she never launched.
How She Broke Free
When Rebecca reached out, our work focused on reclaiming her time, focus, energy, and effort by addressing the spin triggers head-on. Here’s how:
Facing the Fear of the Unknown
- Together, we walked through a worst-case, best-case, and most-likely scenario.
- This exercise reframed uncertainty and anchored her in her values, and gave her confidence that even the “worst” would be a valuable learning experience.

Cutting Through Information Overload
- We applied the Rule of 3 priorities: identify the three most important actions for the next 30 days.
- This brought clarity, reduced overwhelm, and gave her a realistic starting point.

Breaking the Grip of Perfectionism
- I introduced her to the 80% Rule: if it’s 80% good, it’s good enough to move forward.
- We celebrated small wins, which built her confidence and momentum.
Breaking Out of Spin Mode
Rebecca’s story illustrates what so many of us experience. Emotional triggers—like fear, anxiety, and overwhelm—can hijack our four resources and keep us spinning. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to stay stuck.
The key is learning a simple reset formula:
When Rebecca applied this formula, she moved from hesitation to clarity, from fear to confidence. Within a few months, she had a clear roadmap, manageable priorities, and the courage to step into her business with confidence.
And here’s the point: if Rebecca could do it, so can you. The same triggers that tripped her up may be at work in your life right now. The good news is, the same reset formula can get you moving again.
The Takeaway
Spin mode is common, but it’s not permanent. The moment you recognize the triggers, reset your focus, and take intentional steps forward, you begin to win.
As I often say:
You don’t have to spin—you can win.
Recognize. Release. Refocus. Re-engage.
